Main Conference Class #13
Spindles Around the World (F)
Friday, Aug 2
1:30 - 4:30 pm

Spindle spinning has been performed throughout all of human history and
across many cultures. This class is an overview of a variety of spindles from
around the world and the types of fiber most often spun on the spindles. Expect
to see support, high whorl, low whorl spindles and to hear a few stories about
loss, discovery and innovation. Feel free to bring unique spindles from your
collection to share with the group. The brave or curious will be encouraged to
“give it a whirl (whorl)”.

Level: No experience required.
Material fee: $5

Instructor: Joan Goldstein

Joan needs to know that she won’t have a minute without something to do, and drop
spindles provide that security. For 25 years, she has carried a water bottle filled with fiber
and a spindle, whether she is on a backpacking trip or sitting in an airport . . . whatever. The
benefits are numerous: she ends up with yarn that she can knit, and searching for a new
spindle in foreign countries gives focus. Since 2001, she has been dedicated to sharing fiber
art skills through classes, workshops and mentoring. Joan became a MAWS Living Treasure
in 2022.
