MAWS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with the objective to "foster communication between individuals and groups engaged in hand weaving and hand spinning."

Membership is open to anyone with an interest in preserving, promoting, and learning about fiber arts.  This includes, but is not limited to, hand spinning, hand weaving, felting, basketry, bead work, sewing, quilting, knitting, crochet work, tatting, or any other method of creating and embellishing textiles.

MAWS sponsors a state-wide biennial conference (held in one of six Montana locations on a rotating basis) which includes lectures, workshops, seminars, juried shows, fashion shows, and other activities which may be  of interest to fiber enthusiasts, as well as the general business meeting of the organization.

In addition to eligibility for voting, holding office, and participation in the conferences, each member receives a quarterly newsletter.  The MAWS newsletter lists regional fiber events, and provides free classified ads to members.  MAWS also provides grants to member guilds for learning opportunities held in
non-conference years.
